English as a Second Language (ESL) Online Program

Gain the English language skills you need to thrive in the office or in university classes. Learning English at the academic level will open up exciting new career and study opportunities.

Overview

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program aims to help students improve their English language abilities and equip them to be successful in their studies and careers. This non-degree, non-credit bearing program is made up of eight levels of proficiency and students will be placed at the best level for them based on their personal experience. After reaching the highest-level students will take the Oxford Test of English to prove their competency in English. Similar to our other programs, students will be asked to pay an assessment fee of $150 at the end of each course, however, the University may provide scholarships to students who are unable to pay this fee.

Admission Requirements

Anyone who has graduated high school, is 16 years of age or older, and can provide a valid English test score taken from one of the following below can study online at Wexford.

  • TOEFL IBT 
  • TOEFL PBT 
Those unable to provide a valid English test score have the option of beginning the ESL program at Level 3.

This course focuses on basic grammar and simple sentence structures. Students will be able to explain their background and give information on the most immediate needs in their daily lives. This course contains peer assessment that involves short and direct answers. This course is offered only in English.

None | ENGL 0003

This course concludes the foundation of simple applied grammar and composition. Students will be able to participate in a simple exchange of information and understand expressions used most in everyday life, including simple employment phrases. Further, students will start to formulate simple paragraphs. They will also learn the academic skill of editing and revising their work. This course is offered only in English.

None | ENGL 0004

In this course, students will be introduced to reading strategies with an emphasis on short readings in their field of study. They will learn different note-taking strategies and create mixed length sentences. They will be able to formulate a simple 5-paragraph paper based on personal interest. This course is offered only in English.

None | ENGL 0005

In this course, students will learn academic uses of grammar and begin to perform basic research. Topics of applied grammar and paraphrase are an additional focus for students. Students will be able to present their knowledge of subjects in their field of study through informative essays. There is peer assessment in the form of review and editing feedback. This course is offered only in English.

3 Credits | ENGL 0006

In this course, students expand their academic English skills as they are introduced to complex texts and discussions in their field. They will also be able to take a side on a written debate and express their opinion. Students will be able to present subjects clearly via persuasive and argumentative essay with a special emphasis on refining grammar and increasing vocabulary. Focusing on utilizing composition knowledge, students hypothesize on academics including journal articles. There is peer assessment in the form of review and editing feedback. This course is offered only in English.

None | ENGL 0007

This course is a capstone of all what the students have learned from previous levels and will test students’ ability to demonstrate in clear and academic terms different aspects of their discipline’s subject matter. They will be able to write a compare/contrast essay. There is peer assessment in the form of review and editing feedback. The student must pass a final exam at a B2 score or higher. This course is offered only in English. Proctored.

English as a Second Language Program Costs

Wexford does not charge for tuition, books, or campus expenses. We charge only a $60 application fee for the ESL program, and a $150 assessment fee at the end of each course. By submitting your English test scores you may be placed in a higher level, resulting in fewer courses to complete the program and saving you money!

Does Wexford Institute accept international students?

 Absolutely! wexford institute has students from over 200 countries and territories.

Absolutely! Classes at Wexford institute are small and highly qualified instructors are available to answer students’ questions and offer support. Additionally, each student is connected with a personal Program Advisor at the commencement of their studies, who remains with them until graduation. Program Advisors act as the students’ personal support system throughout their studies. The Program Advisor will answer any questions the student may have, offer academic advice, discuss course selection, and offer encouragement throughout the student’s studies.

Asynchronous learning allows you to learn on your own schedule. You will have access via the Wexford institute Online Campus to assignments, lectures, and other learning materials. There are no live lectures or set class times at Wexford institute.
